Interview with Mom's Day. Punkrock Band from Albstadt, Germany

Mom’s Day are a band of four sunny guys from the funky South West of Germany, they are into fast melodic Punkrock, jump around a lot on stage and never take themselves too serious. Since they formed on Mother’s Day 2001 Benni, Marky, Anton and Jan have played over 300 Shows throughout Germany, Switzerland and Austria together and released five Albums. They shared stages with bands like Enter Shikari, Liquido, Donots, Emil Bulls and Punkrock Legend T.V.Smith and already had an amazing Indonesia-tour in 2006 playing 10 shows in Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta and Kuta e.g.
Still refusing to grow up, Mom’s Day are still hungry for adrenaline, so in February 2011 they come back to Nusantara and Malaysia to check out whether their South East Asian Friends still remember them and share a time they won’t ever forget.

Here my interview with Anton Hendel from Mom’s day thank you for the good time via Facebook chat at 12:13 AM Indonesian Time

Tammy : Hi Anton, How are you there ? Thanks for taking some time to do and interview with me.
Anton :  Sure, with pleasure

Tammy: First tell me the band history, like when you start and who are the members ?
Anton : My band Mom's Day was born in 2001. Frontguy Benni and Bassguy Marky decided to form a band during a train ride and as it was on Mother's Day they had the idea to call the band "MOM'S DAY"
Later Jan, the drummer, joined them and the three of them practiced for some months until i joined them for playing the second guitar
i remember we had a rehearsal room up in a bell tower of a protestant church haha

Tammy : In a chuch ? how it can be ? haha
Anton : ya, we were a typical school band and i think Jan knew the church's pastor, and some of us also played in christian bands back then

Tammy: What type of music do you play ?
Anton : we play punkrock with german lyrics and synthesizers to get an impression, just listen 2 our songs on facebook

Tammy : How many album has the band had ?
Anton : it depends on how serious our first cds can be taken, as we did them all ourselves, recording the drums in the basement of Jan's parents and paintig the cover artwork with water colours but then, since 2005 we have produced 4 cds which we still sell at our concerts, and we play the songs which are on them. By the way , this weekend we start recording our next cd, it will contain 5 awesome tracks

Tammy : Good luck for the record guys ! now can you tell me what album or songs which is the most successful ?
Anton : i don't know, i think our 2009 album "Super Sonnig" is the one we like best and it even has a boardgame in the cover haha
in this game you have to use the shuffle-mode of the cd-player instead of dices

Tammy: What are you main influence ?
Anton : i think our music style mostly sounds like NOFX and stuff like that but recently we are also influenced by all that cheesy eurodance trash from the 90s

Tammy: What are you lyric about ?
Anton : most lyrics are not too serious, about girls, everyday life or fun. many punkrock or hardcore bands sing about political matters, but for us this is a difficult topic as we don't know much about politics

Tammy : How the progress underground music in there ?
Anton : there is indeed an underground scene here, people who organize d.i.y. shows and festivals but it can not be compared to what you guys have in indonesia. we were really impressed by what we saw. we liked the commitment of the indonesian underground scene

Tammy : Do you play in any band ? besides mom’s day ?
Anton : yes i have a band with some friends called MANTIKOR which sounds like this: http://youtu.be/sgQZMKigiDU we play metal core with some melodic vocals. but we don't have many shows as it's just a side project for all of us. Jan also has a good rock band, it's called NAVIGATOR.

Tammy : How many country have you been visiting ? and what do you think about Indonesia ?
Anton : indonesia and malaysia are the only abroad countries where we had a tour. we love it. people are always very sweet and hospitable with us and the climate is awesome. when we were in Nusa the first time in 2006 we were very imressed by the melodicpunk scene. we had a bunch of shows with some really great bands in jakarta, bandung, jogjakarta and malang, just to name a few

Tammy : when you are in a tour to Indonesia, have stay to perfome a while. Unfortunetly, we canceled you to play because we have some trouble between local people and involved some policemen. What do you think to such way ?
Anton :  of course we were unhappy that we could not make music and we hope someday we return and play a comcert in jember. but this situation is familiar to us, in germany concerts are also being interrupted by police if the neighbors complain about noise or mess. there are laws saying at what time you have to be quiet at night

Tammy : is there ever happen such chaos when the gig is running ?
Anton : yes, i remember an awesome concert in our hometown some years ago. we played and were half an hour beyond our permission and a policeman came to the stage and told us to stop. fortunately we were playing our last song anyway so it was ok and the policeman was very friendly

Tammy : which city in Indonesia is very memorable for you guys ?
Anton : personally i can not pick a particular city because every place we had the luck to visit was memorable for me. each city was different and showed us new interesting things but what all the places had in common was that we made friends, were treated very kindly and it broke our heart to leave every time we had to travel on.

Tammy :  do you want to visit Indonesia again ?
Anton :  yes we do. does indonesia want us to visit them again?  but before we can go on another tour we need a lot of planning and preparation, everyone must safe the money for the flight and our booking contacts in indo are busy with booking the shows. i think next time maybe we should do less gigs and spend more time exploring the places - like the beach in jember  anyway we need people who support us by booking concerts, promoting gigs, providing contacts or simply spreading the word. last year for example we got really awesome support by our friend kunx from bandung and the pyrate punx community.

Tammy : each of you have other jobs besides playing in the band ?
Anton : yes, that's right. we can not pay the rents by playing in the band. some of us work, some study. these days we even live in different cities and we can only meet at weekend to practice or play gigs

Tammy : what your upcoming plan ?
Anton : as i said, the next project is to record the five awesome tracks for our new cd and release it. we'd love to shoot a funny video for one of the songs in which we all wear futuristic costumes have a completely grotesque party...
in summer we are going to play at some regional festivals

Tammy : for the last, do you have some quote for friends and fans in Indonesia ?
Anton :  jangan lupa Mom's Day, we will come back one day! greetings from germany
